Another Sunday Afternoon Matinee staple

Product Description

It's spring 1941, and Great Britain is the only country in Europe yet to be defeated by the Nazi army, but all of that could change soon. The Nazis have launched their juggernaut battleship, the Bismarck, to close off British supply lines and ultimately invade England. A counterstrike is ordered, and with an arsenal of ships at their command, Royal intelligence officers Jonathan Shepard (Kenneth More) and Anne Davis (Dana Wynter) fight desperately to destroy the Bismarck.

I always liked that film - even though I always thought they should have taken the Kenneth More character to the sauna to thaw. I remember reading WIlliam Shirer's The Sinking of the Bismark as a kid. I still have the book in my library.  When I was in Belgium I discovered Airfix models and set out to build every ship involved in the battle to recreate it; kind of like my lifelong project to recreate the Alamo (and other historic events).

Oceania was at war with Eastasia. Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia

Am not certain how many might be interested, but have had the opportunity to do a little research regarding the KMS Bismarck, so for those who might be historically and/or technically inclined;

One of the most accurate war films ever turned out.  They got the ships' names and movements correct except for the extra British destroyer blow up in the night torpedo attack.  Several of Vians destroyers were holed but none seriously.  On one hand I would like to see "Sink the Bismarck" remade with modern CGI, but I cringe at the thought of the current crop of screen writers ruining the story.  The real story had a lot of drama, spies, searches, an uncertain outcome until the last 24hrs.

Indeed, right on both counts.  Too bad most current directors and writers look at CGI as a crutch, rather than a tool to be used with restraint and intelligence.  It has been the hammer to ever large budget film's nail.
