The story is a classic, all these bombing efforts took brave crews no matter what the command. Making it to the magic number in daylight bombing was no mean feat back then. Makes you appreciate Jimmy Stewart's 36 missions all the more.
No doubt Memphis Belle and U571 are poor representations of WWII BUT, to me they were both fun and sufficiently capable of encouraging my investment in one or more of the "heros" to make them fun. I just watched 20 trailers for movies coming in 2017 and NOT ONE offered that promise. I really don't think we can make a decent movie any more.
Some WW2 movies can be mawkish to a certain degree and they still work okay.
With MB, Hollywood took that aspect of movie making and wrung it out to the point where it stepped over the line and turned out a screenplay that is a travesty of the real 8th Air Force story.
It's unfortunate, but the way-too-syrupy and maudlin treatment of what could and should have been a much better movie almost turns it into unintentional caricature.
Like I said, in this particular case, I simply don't care about all the saccharine and intend to watch it yet again later today -- after I get through The Drum.
