I've just this minute downloaded this title to my kindle. Got a couple other books to finish and then I'll start on this one.

Brad, I was wrong. Once I started searching I realized I've never read any of John le Carre's books. It was Len Deighton I was thinking of, and I've certainly read a good few of his tomes.
I'll let you know what I think of it, but the reviews are definitely promising.

The book is Winter: The Tragic Story of a Berlin Family 1889-1945. It's a prelude to his Game, Set and Match books. Winter is a fabulous book.
Yes -- it's a brilliant book!
I just discovered that You Tube has the full Tinker Tailor, for those who may be interested.
Okay, I'll have a look for it when I get home. Need to get my VPN working again though cos YT is blocked in the Middle Kingdom.

Brad I would recommend Len Deighton book Goodbye Mickey mouse about a young 8th Airforce Pilot in Britain in ww2I'm a big LeCarre fan, having read most of his books, and have read his Karla trilogy a couple of times: Tinker Tailor, the Honourable and Smileys People.
In my opinion, the movie is poor. It tries to update the story and it's nowhere near as good as the book. What the book should be compared to is the six hour series that starred Alec Guinness as George Smiley, Le Carre's most enduring character (although he only appeared in four or five of his books). Guinness is Smiley and the series was faithful to the book. I watch the series at least yearly. Guinness also starred in Smileys People, also a great book and a series.
Once you've seen the series, the movie will seem wanting in comparison. Save your money and get both series.
Regarding Deighton, I loved his Bernard Samson stories. They were very good. Of course, Harry Palmer is great too. I love the old Cold War Berlin. He also wrote a few books about a German family that were excellent. Let me see if I can find the name.
