I really wanted to go in-depth on the background and Byzantine politics behind the First Sikh War. Once these are known, then the conduct and outcome of this furious conflict are easily understood.
In common with the Sepoy Mutiny which I'm going to return to at some future point, and was only around ten years down the road, this war has absolutely everything:-
Life, death, love, hatred, corruption, ambition, treason, murder, romance, faith and betrayal.
Exquisite cultures, shameful persecutions, palace intrigues, strange and quite unbelievable alliances, alluring harems, tortures, shady deals, executions, injustice and vengeance.
Loyalty, brutality, adultery, nobility, depravity and folly.
Despots and martinets, family feuds, courage and cowardice.
Gaudy glamour, rampant venality, relentless pursuit of power.
Bizarre personalities, poisonous back-stabbers, relentless rabble-rousers, lies and deceptions.
Petty tyrants with personal vices, illiterate religious maniacs, bloody battles, triumphs and tragedies.
Phew....
....
Why, it’s almost a microcosm of an on-line minority, (niche), hobby....
....or the present race for the Whitehouse.
What’s not to like?
....

Yes, if we are to be judged by whom we chose to govern us, we are truly SOL. But then I have always been more of a Jeffersonian Democrat. Given what the primaries are telling us about the voice of the electorate, I am not too thrilled by its composition at present.
